Remember the days when vegan cheese didn’t really taste like cheese at all? It had that awful grainy texture, wasn’t stretchy or melty, and the taste was just…off. I think it’s safe to say that those days are coming to an end, phew!
Enter: Daiya Foods Smoked Gouda
The first thing that hits you when you open the package is the smell. It’s that smoky deliciousness that you expect from a smoked cheese. Then there was the slicing, smooth and creamy feel, I almost forgot that this was vegan cheese. No plastic or rubbery feeling, it was just right. Then came the taste test! Daiya really hit the nail on the head with this one. I thought it tasted exactly like it’s non-vegan counterpart, but, I haven’t had real cheese in years, so I put it to the real test: the non-vegan taste test. I gave a piece to my uncle and without even asking what he thought, he said “I wouldn’t know the difference between that and real cheese.” So there you go, from a non-vegan mouth, basically, this sh** is good.
Okay so the raw taste test knocked it out of the park, but what about when cooked? I put a slice on some toast and put it in a pan with a lid on it. I left it there for probably 10 minutes, and unfortunately, no real melting occurred. It got soft, which was great, but it didn’t have that bubbly gooey quality that you would expect from dairy cheese. Even without the melting quality, I can’t wait to try this out in a grilled cheese, pizza, and mac ‘n cheese. The opportunities are endless!
Overall, I would buy this product again. The only downside was the lack of melting, but I can get over that since all of the other aspects rocked. Still waiting on food scientists to crack the code on melty vegan cheeses!
