Disclaimer: I received Pan’s Mushroom Jerky for free in order to review the product. However, I have, to the best of my ability, been unbiased in the following review.
The Product: Shiitake Mushroom Jerky
Pan’s Mushroom Jerky is made of shiitake stems marinated in a special sweet and savory spice blend. The stems are then dehydrated to give a jerky like texture. What I love about this is that they get the stems from a supplier that only uses the caps. What would have been waste is turned into a delicious and sustainable vegan jerky snack. Currently, there is one original flavor available, but a new spicy flavor will be available soon.
The packaging clearly indicates sweet and savory, and that is an apt description. The first thing that hits you is the sweetness of the coconut sugar. Next, the umami of the mushrooms come through, and finally, the spices linger behind.
After a few bites, I noticed that my fingers were oily from the fourth ingredient, avocado oil. I thought it was a little unusual for jerky to be that oily, but I wasn’t at all put off by it. Once I opened the package and started tasting for this review, I found it hard to stop eating these little shiitake jerky bites. I noticed throughout the day that I kept picking up the bag and eating more until there were only a few left and I finally made myself stop! The flavor and texture combination kept me coming back over and over again. I’ll admit, I finished the bag while writing this review and was a bit sad that it was gone.
The Bottom Line
Overall, I would get this product again. At $9 USD for a 2.2 ounce bag, this snack isn’t cheap, but I love the idea of supporting a company that prides itself in creating simple, sustainable snacks carried down through family tradition.
